Listen to Bird Calls

This 3 days trek is designed for those who like to be immersed in nature, enjoy wildlife observation and look forward to camping in the forest. Traversing the Phou Khao Khouay National Protected Area, the trail follows the Nam Leuk River. The trek starts at the Tad Leuk Waterfall in the southeast of the National Park and ends at the southern tip of the Nam Ngum Lake, where the Nam Leuk Reservoir (note that this area is inhabited by the Siamese Crocodile!) feeds the river.

Highlights: Vientiane - Tad Leuk waterfall - Buffalo Park – Vientiane

  • Day 1 - Vientiane - Tad Leuk Waterfall

    Place Transport: Car
    Meals: Lunch - Dinner
    Transfer from Vientiane to the Tad Leuk waterfall in the Phou Khao Khouay National Protected Area. After a visit of the permanent exhibit at the Tad Leuk Visitors' Centre, 4 hours of easy trekking will take the group to the first camp site, a sandstone beach on the edge of the dry riverbed. The trail will offer plenty of opportunities for bird spotting and tracing monkeys and other animals.

    Day 2 - Buffalo Park – Trekking

    After an early rise, a 5-6 hour walk includes a steep but short climb to the top of a waterfall. It's a great viewpoint over the surrounding canopy. Amidst clear bamboo and liana forest, a very large Burma Mahogany tree makes for a spectacular landmark. During twilight, birds, monkeys and squirrels can be observed in the up to 40 m high pine trees around the camp site.

    Day 3 - Buffalo Park – Vientiane

    Place Transport: Car
    Meals: Breakfast - Lunch
    Starting the day early, the trail passes a very rich section of old forest, which is known as a habitat for tigers and elephants. The guides will be able to show you the traces of elephants, often damaged trees and bushes or even footprints. By lunch time, the dam of the Ang Nam Leuk reservoir is reached. Note that this area is inhabited by the Siamese Crocodile! After lunch and a break, the group is met by a vehicle for transfer to Vientiane.

    The Tour Inclusion:
